The cover art for “Graveyard” represents her two separate personas. Not only is it an anagram of her real name Ashley, but also it pertains to the street name where she resided when she was first discovered, Halsey Street in Brooklyn, New York. The name “Halsey” does contain pertinent significance to the singer. Halsey represented a more desirable alter ego she was someone who demanded a stronger stage presence. In past interviews, Halsey described the need to come up with a new identity for herself stemmed from viewing Ashley as someone who was emotionally fragile and awkward. “I know when you go down all your darkest roads / I woulda followed all the way to the graveyard / Oh, ‘cause I keep diggin’ myself down deeper / I won’t stop ‘til I get where you are.” The heart of the song addresses knowing one’s own value and to know when to back away from a relationship.įor those who are unfamiliar with the singer, they might be surprised to find out that “Halsey” isn’t her real name. The chorus details a tumultuous relationship where she would follow someone into the depths of their own darkness, even at her own demise. Since Halsey is an extraordinary and poetic songwriter, lyrically this is unequivocally one of her strongest works. In a tweet posted after the show, she described the experience as an “incredible event that she was honored to be a part of.” It was a very accurate and intense performance which portrayed a toxic relationship along with a recognition of one’s own self-worth. She started off alone at the highest part of the stage, crooning to the audience the vulnerable opening lines of the song: “It’s crazy when / the thing you love the most is the detriment / and let that sink in.” Throughout the performance, Halsey interacted with several of the dancers in sultry exchanges, only for her to abruptly dismiss them to have them later come crawling back to her. These two contrasting sides of her personality are deliberately illustrated to highlight the next chapter in her musical career. Halsey is one of the most talented performers of her generation. Often they sound quite different and can provide different experiences. Like Sia, she is able to produce different versions of her song that make for great acoustic mixes and dance mixes. HALSEY GRAVEYARD PLUSShe has an extremely unique voice, which is a plus for any artist. The sound is at times both tender and urgent. If there is any solace to be taken from the song, it is that the author is singing in the past tense: “I would’ve followed you down to the graveyard.” Somehow she escaped the abuse, yet she admits to herself she probably would go down the same path again-regardless where the path leads. Halsey says it may lead her to the graveyard, but the excitement from the relationship is too good to give up. So, what then? Too often, we follow our emotions to our detriment. But sometimes our logic and our emotions don’t align. Due to her upbringing, her genes, her misplaced attraction or devotion, to her, warning signs are indistinguishable from butterflies. It is a song about abuse that contains a great use of extended metaphor. This comes across as a powerful line, rather than a trite cliché, because there is a good chance that her relationship could lead to her harm or death. She says she will “follow him down to the graveyard”. She realizes this, yet it does not hinder her love for him. In “Graveyard”, Halsey’s partner is physically abusive.
